Love muti or date rape drug?

Witbank police in Mpumalanga are investigating a trend in schools where a so-called love drug has grown popular,

Apparently these small transparent sweets are sold at traditional shops for as little as R10.

It is believed that if a person sucks on this sweet while talking to their love interest, they will magically fall in love with the admirer. For added effect after sucking on the sweet, they slip the sweet into that person’s cooldrink or water bottle.

The police have opened a case and investigating the matter where a girl allegedly passed out and was taken to hospital after this “love muti” was put into her drink at a school in Pine Ridge. The identity of the girl has not been disclosed, but the drug will be sent for analysis.

Apparently even after sucking on the sweet for a short time, police say people show unusual behaviour. It bears similarities to date rape drugs.

Drug abuse in general is a common problem in schools, where drugs are even sold on school grounds.

The police warn parents to be aware of their children’s habits and changes in personality, as drugs do cause behavioural changes.
