UN seeks solution on Gambia #CAP

The United Nations Security Council has held consultations on the situation in the Gambia. The Under Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman briefed members of the council.

This as security forces in the country take control of the Independent Election Commission's headquarters in the capital Banjul after incumbent President Yahya Jammeh refused to hand over power to President-elect Adama Barrow.

The international community has strongly condemned the move.

President of the Council, Spain's ambassador Juan Manuel de Liners Palou says, "The members of the Security Council express serious concern over the take over of the Gambia's independent electoral commission premises by the military. They urged the Gambian military and security forces to immediately vacate the IC premises and to avoid any interference in the peaceful transfer of power."

The members of the SC further encouraged the AU and ECOWAS to pursue its effort to avoid a further deterioration of the situation in the Gambia.
