MANILA - China on Monday announced it is donating aid to the Philippines to help farmers and fishermen affected by the devastation brought by Typhoon Lawin (Haima).
In a statement, the Chinese Embassy said the Chinese government has donated financial aid amounting to P50 million and also committed about P35-million (RMB 5 million) to the Philippine anti-disaster efforts.
The Red Cross Society of China will also provide a humanitarian aid of USD 100,000 to the Philippines.
The overall amount of aid from the Chinese side is about P90 million, the embassy said.
"The Chinese side is confident that under the leadership of President Duterte, people in the stricken areas will overcome the calamity and return to their normal work and lives as soon as possible," the embassy said.
The embassy said Chinese President Xi Jinping "expressed sympathy and condolences" to President Rodrigo Duterte during their bilateral talk in Beijing on October 20, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has also expressed his sympathy to his counterpart, Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay.
"Lawin," which hammered through northern Luzon last week, is the strongest typhoon to hit the country this year. It left at least 12 casualties and billions in damages.
